Alps4GreenC

Biochar and Green Carbon

Contacts:

TANJA BERGLEZ KRIVEC

Purpose:

Biochar and green charcoal derived from biomass residues can significantly contribute to reducing the energy dependency of the Alpine region, which is still increasing, as well as its vulnerability to climate change and loss of biodiversity.

The Alps4GreenC project contributes to the conditions for energy self-sufficiency and climate protection in the region by establishing the foundations for transnational utilization of biomass residues.

Financing sources:

The project is financed trough the INTERREG Alpine Space initative.

Goals:

Through policy recommendations and green carbon pilot production, the project explores biomass conversion opportunities and proposes transnational value chains based on biochar. This first transnational collaboration for the establishment of a biochar production value chain will enable the identification and upgrading of appropriate biomass conversion technologies and the full realization of the transition to green, post-carbon approaches.

Activities:

  • establishing an environment for the transnational use of biomass residues and proposing transnational value chains based on biochar
  • a proposal for support measures and recommendations for coordination at the political level
  • practical testing and pilot production of biochar for use in agriculture and the steel industry
  • mapping of interested stakeholders and campaign of mass collection of biomass residues with awareness
  • market gap analysis of biomass conversion options for green carbon supply
